Talbot’s Tower
Talbot’s Tower
Talbots Tower and the walls that adjoin it are the most well preserved section of the cities medieval walled defences. Talbot’s tower originally defended the south-west corner of Kilkenny’s Hightown, the tower was known throughout the medieval period as ‘St. Patrick’s Tower’ in reference to the nearby suburb of Domhnachpatrick. Very little of the history of Talbot’s tower was ever documented and therefore archaeological excavations have been taking place to allow a much fuller history of the tower to be told.

Totally worthwhile tour, 8 Euro each for half an hour which gives you a history of Kilkenny through Cromwells siege, the Black Death/famine and a concise history of any of the remarkable architecture. Very friendly and helpful staff who went out of their way to be helpful and pleasant. Visited May 2017Jamie W
