Black Marble Kilkenny
Black Marble Kilkenny
The City of Kilkenny is often referred to as "The Marble City". Much of the foothpaths, buildings, gravestones, and city walls were built with limestone. A very dark grey Limestone, it was quarried just outside Kilkenny City at a place known as "The Black Quarry". Kilkenny Black Marble as it was known has been used in many projects and parts of Ireland, such as the National Botanical Gardens in Dublin, the Cobh Cathedral in Cobh, Co. Cork and the headstone of the great Irish political leader Daniel O'Connell in Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublin.

Totally worthwhile tour, 8 Euro each for half an hour which gives you a history of Kilkenny through Cromwells siege, the Black Death/famine and a concise history of any of the remarkable architecture. Very friendly and helpful staff who went out of their way to be helpful and pleasant. Visited May 2017Jamie W
