The Thosel
The Thosel
The name Tholsel derives from two old English words ‘toll’ which means tax and ‘sael’ which means hall and is now known as the Town Hall. Built in 1761 using local limestone, it served as a custom house, guildhall, courthouse and today is a seat of local government and tax collection. A favourite spot for busking musicians and street art exhibitions!

Totally worthwhile tour, 8 Euro each for half an hour which gives you a history of Kilkenny through Cromwells siege, the Black Death/famine and a concise history of any of the remarkable architecture. Very friendly and helpful staff who went out of their way to be helpful and pleasant. Visited May 2017Jamie W
